Senior Research Scientist - Entomologist
Location:
Long Grove, IL.
General Description:
Responsible for organizational leadership and scientific expertise in entomology and research related to biorational pesticides, particularly biological and biochemical insecticides. Designs experimental protocols for lab, growth chamber, greenhouse, and field experiments and implements hands-on studies, as appropriate. Interfaces with outside researchers and contract research organizations. Conducts data analysis and interpretation and prepares experimental reports, summaries and recommendations. Prepares and presents technical presentations for internal and external audiences. Oversees the establishment and/or maintenance of insect colonies for internal and/or external research, GLP studies for product registration, and product release purposes. Works in a matrix-style design across internal functional groups, including other Research groups, Field Development, Formulations, Manufacturing, QA/QC, Regulatory Affairs, and Business Management.
Principal Responsibilities:
Generate experimental data packages with biorational insecticides necessary for product development, label expansion, and new lead evaluation purposes.
Provide technical leadership and support to project teams charged with the responsibility of developing new biorational insecticides.
Provide technical support and guidance to microbial-based research programs managed at the VBC Research Center in Long Grove, as appropriate, including small-scale fermentation projects.
Develop effective biological assays, assemble diverse biological data and apply appropriate statistical analysis of data.
Work closely with various 3rd party cooperators to oversee insectary operations and make recommendations to address future needs.
Work with other microbiology personnel to effectively manage and further exploit VBCs microbial strain library. Assume primary responsibility for associated screening evaluations for insecticidal activity.
Provide technical support to manufacturing operations regarding QC operations and biological efficacy of biorational insecticide products, as appropriate.
Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies and maintain safe working environment.
Keep accurate records in lab books and in other formats such as computer database.
Prepare reports and make oral presentations as needed in support of research, development, formulations, registrations, and marketing.
Evaluation of new leads (e.g., active ingredients, technologies) for potential inclusion in R&D portfolio.
Supervise one or more technical personnel.
Education/Experience:
A Doctorate degree in entomology with 3-5 years of post-graduate experience that also includes R&D work in microbiology, especially Bacillus sp. Must have broad practical working knowledge with insect pests important in agricultural crop production. Experience with various biological pesticides and formulations thereof is highly desired. Prior experience with implementing literature research protocols and developing new protocols. Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) standards and regulations is desired. Requires good computer software skills (e.g. word processor, spreadsheets, and databases, and statistical packages). Excellent English communication skills are required.
