Field R&D Scientist

General Description:
Position supports the global development efforts of Valent BioSciences Corporation. Responsible for Field R&D activities, including the identification of new product opportunities, planning and conducting field research with VBC experimental materials and products, interpreting and reporting research data and providing technical expertise to management, sales & marketing.
Responsibilities:
Assist Product Development Managers with planning of Field R&D programs and definition of workplan objectives; design trials consistent with objectives, and develop protocols for trial execution.
Organize, initiate, and complete field trials, both personally, and through contracted work with various types of cooperators, including private growers, university and government agencies, and consultants; manage expense and outside grants budgets within annual targets; develop strong working relationships with cooperators and relevant external influencers.
Report trial outcomes via timely written reports, and presentations at update & review meetings; provide frequent updates on trial progress using monthly reports and updated workplans.
Communicate clear and concise recommendations concerning VBC strategic direction, synthesizing information across multiple field trials and/or development programs.
Transfer technology for VBC products to affiliated marketing/sales organizations through field training and demonstration programs, oral and written presentations; assist in the creation of promotional materials.
Assist with writing product labels, official trial reports, and other product registration activities.
Identify and assess strategic growth opportunities through personal knowledge/experience, employing regional market information, and competitive intelligence. Communicate these opportunities to others within VBC using monthly reports, memos, idea sheets, etc.
Skills: Excellent writing and presentation skills. Knowledge of typical statistical procedures & experimental design. Computer competencies to include word-processing, document handling (Acrobat), spreadsheet, statistical and presentation software within a Windows environment. Skilled in the use of agricultural application equipment commonly used in field trials. Can be depended upon to develop new skills and procedures as needed for novel field assignments. Able to manage technical support personnel (interns, technicians, and temporary help) when required. Expected to function with only periodic supervision; works independently for the majority of responsibilities.
Experience: Ten (10) or more years experience in field research related to the evaluation of agricultural products.
Knowledge: Expertise in crop production and horticultural/pest management practices within US & California is essential. Expertise with vegetable production, plant growth regulators, environmental stress management, and crop physiology are highly beneficial. Must be knowledgeable of relevant private and public agricultural research agencies & influential cooperators in the US.
Education: Degree in an agricultural or related science required; advanced degree (PhD or MS) preferred.
Other: Physically able to carry out field research trials outdoors, including product application and evaluation; must maintain relevant pesticide applicators license; may be required to wear personal protective equipment. Travel by air and car (40% - 60%).
