Danforth Plant Science Center and Valent BioSciences will Collaborate in Unique Root Science Initiative

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Master Agreement will focus on improving agriculture with non-destructive imaging technology for root growth dynamics

LIBERTYVILLE, IL, July 11, 2016 – Valent BioSciences Corporation (VBC) and the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center today announced the finalization of a multi-year, Master Cooperation Agreement in the area of root science and the rhizosphere. Located in St. Louis, MO, the Danforth Center is among the world’s preeminent institutes for research and innovation surrounding plant science and associated technologies. VBC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Chemical Company and a global leader in the research, development, and commercialization of biorational technology for agriculture, public health and forestry.

“We are pleased to be entering into this agreement with a partner that has such demonstrated success in plant science innovation”, said James Carrington, Ph.D., president of the Danforth Plant Science Center. “We view our imaging work as a potentially game-changing technology that warrants a collaborator with a global view and a full complement of proven, effective technologies to help us improve the human condition through plant science. VBC was our first choice.”

Until now, the only way for plant scientists to observe in-field root development has been to extract them from the soil. For the first time, today’s advanced imaging technology allows real-time data gathering in a way that is non-destructive and non-disruptive to future plant development.

The agreement is designed to maximize outcome potential by intersecting core competencies from within the two organizations. The Danforth Center focuses on discoveries and technologies for improving agricultural productivity with minimal environmental impact including new research on non-destructive imaging technology for root growth dynamics. Over the last two years, VBC has made sizeable commitments to rhizosphere technologies including the acquisition of Mycorrhizal Applications, LLC (MA) and several licensing and research agreements designed to accelerate its root zone portfolio.

“It was an honor to be approached by the Danforth Center as a collaborator for this significant body of work,” said Dr. Warren Shafer, Vice President of R&D and Regulatory Affairs for Valent BioSciences. “There is an obvious overlap in mission and purpose between the two organizations, and our knowledge and respective technologies are clearly complementary. Together, they hold tremendous potential for our stakeholders.”

Danforth Center Principal Investigator Chris Topp, Ph.D., was recently awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to support his work combining root phenotyping technologies with computational analysis, quantitative genetics and molecular biology to understand root growth and physiology. The NSF and VBC agreements will jointly fund a large-scale X-ray imaging system for non-invasive root measurements, the first of its kind dedicated for plant science in the U.S. academic research sector.

Through MA and SyMyco Inc., a joint venture in which MA participates, VBC brings the world’s foremost experts in the study and propagation of mycorrhizae – beneficial fungi that colonize plant roots to enhance nutrient uptake and water efficiency. VBC also has research agreements in place with BioMar, LidoChem, and Rhizobacter, all established leaders in emerging biorational technology for the rhizosphere and beyond.

U.S. EPA Approves New VectoPrime™ Biological Larvicide for Single-brood Floodwater Mosquito Larvae Programs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Breakthrough dual-action larvicide provides effective control in all four instar stages for all mosquito species

LIBERTYVILLE, IL, February, 24, 2015 – Valent BioSciences Corporation (VBC) announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted registration approval for VectoPrimeTM Biological Larvicide for single-brood mosquito control. Through the power of BioFuseTM technology, VectoPrime is formulated with a specific ratio of Bacillus thuringiensis spp. israelensis Strain AM65-52 and (S)- methoprene developed through years of painstaking research. The result is a unique combination of efficacy, flexibility, and efficiency benefits to support U.S.-based mosquito abatement professionals.

The dual action of VectoPrime provides control from pre-hatch applications all the way through the 4th instar while delivering a host of related benefits. Asynchronous broods pose a significant challenge in the ongoing battle against mosquitos capable of transmitting harmful diseases such as West Nile virus, dengue fever, malaria, and encephalitis.

“The advanced technology and extended application window offered by VectoPrime allows Mosquito Abatement Districts to plan more and react less,” said Steve Krause, VBC’s Global Business Manager for Public Health and Forestry. “VectoPrime provides Districts the opportunity to streamline their process through lower application rates, which in turn translate into enhanced inventory management, greater agility, and greater value for mosquito control programs at the ground level.”

BioFuse is VBC’s patented formulation technology that combines precise amounts of two active ingredients within the space of a single microparticle. With VectoPrime, both active ingredients are released instantly upon contact with water to provide applicators with immediate, visible proof that mosquito larvae are dead. The product’s reduced application rates drive further operational efficiencies that result in savings on fuel, maintenance, and labor.

VectoPrimeTM joins VBC’s biorational mosquito larvicides VectoBac®, VectoMax®, MetaLarv®, VectoLex®, and Teknar® to provide the public health industry’s most comprehensive range of target-specific, biorational larvicides for mosquito abatement professionals and health care officials around the globe.

Valent BioSciences Corporation Unveils its State-of-the-Art Biorational Manufacturing Facility in Osage, Iowa

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Grand opening event signifies a new era in integrated crop production

OSAGE, IA., June 27, 2014 – Valent BioSciences Corporation (VBC) today marked the official opening of its new $146 million biorational manufacturing facility in Osage, IA in a ceremony that included more than 130 international dignitaries, state and local VIPs, and media personnel. VBC is the global leader in the discovery, development, manufacturing, and commercialization of biorational products for agriculture, public health, and forestry.

Located on an expansive 73-acre site, the new 130,000 square foot plant is the largest purpose-built biorational facility in the world and will serve as the manufacturing and quality control center for VBC’s broad portfolio of fermentation products. VBC brands are derived from biological origins and provide economic, health, and environmental benefits for agriculture, public health, and forestry markets in 95 countries around the globe.

“This is a landmark day for Valent BioSciences, our parent Sumitomo Chemical Company (SCC), and for the entire biorational segment,” said Ted Melnik, VBC Executive Vice President and COO. “Not only does this investment reflect the rapid growth of our business and validate the value of biorational technology in the marketplace, it puts us in the position to meet the rising demand for our products as we continue to develop new and innovative solutions for our customers around the world.”

The opening of the new plant comes on the heels of VBC’s acquisition of Pace International, LLC (Pace), in early 2013 and its announcement of a long term strategic alliance with Biomar Microbial Technologies (Biomar) in February of this year. The Pace acquisition made SCC the first multinational supplier to offer both conventional and biorational product solutions for seed, preharvest crop production, and preharvest and postharvest crop protection applications. The Biomar alliance will create a new pipeline of industry leading, science-based products with additional work being conducted at Valent BioSciences’ research facility at Long Grove, IL.

VBC currently manufactures microbial insecticides, nematicides, and plant growth regulators used in production agriculture for managing plant growth, quality and stress in crops.

Valent BioSciences Corporation Acquires Mycorrhizal Applications, Inc.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Industry leader adds innovative technology platform to further expand its rapidly growing biorational business

LIBERTYVILLE, IL, March 4, 2015 – Valent BioSciences Corporation (VBC), the leader in biorational product development for agriculture, public health, and forestry worldwide, announced today it has acquired Mycorrhizal Applications, Inc. (MA), the world’s largest producer of mycorrhizal fungal inoculum. Mycorrhizal inoculation increases plant productivity by forming a symbiotic relationship with plant roots. Mycorrhizal hyphae attach to roots and radiate out into soil, enhancing access to nutrients and water made available to plants.

The acquisition adds another strategic platform to VBC’s rapidly expanding global biorational business, providing additional tools for the Biorational Window platform being developed with its parent, Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (SCC).

“The acquisition of Mycorrhizal Applications will allow us to accelerate the development of our rhizosphere strategy and immediately reinforce our strength in the biorational business,” said Ted Melnik, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of VBC. “The move affords us the unique opportunity to leverage our internal resources and develop an entire suite of innovative rhizosphere products and technologies that expands our portfolio to meet the needs of growers around the world.”

Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Oregon, MA’s earliest products were developed for forestry and nursery applications. Nearly 90% of the world’s plants form an association with mycorrhizal fungi, which colonize plant roots and provide the host with enhanced capacity for water and mineral uptake. In exchange, the fungi benefit from access to plant carbohydrates, which they use for food. Today, MA’s business has grown to include products for commercial agriculture, manufactured soils, turf, landscape and restoration.

The company’s leading brand, MycoApply®, is sold in powder, granular, and liquid form. Melnik said a dedicated R&D budget, earmarked for rhizosphere product development, has been established to coincide with the acquisition. VBC anticipates a host of new uses, with widespread agricultural applications, being developed in the next few years. Globally, MycoApply® will be sold through the SCC affiliate network. Valent U.S.A.

Corporation will handle commercialization of the Mycorrhizal Applications pipeline and portfolio in Agricultural crops in the NAFTA region, including marketing, product development and sales through associated distribution networks. With this innovative platform technology, Valent U.S.A. will create crop protection and enhancement solutions that complement its existing portfolio to deliver more value to its customers.

“We’re very excited to become part of the VBC and SCC family,” said Dr. Mike Amaranthus, the renowned rhizosphere scientist who co-founded the business with wife, Eileen. “While we will provide our customers with the same quality products and expert support they’ve come to expect from us, VBC’s investment will further accelerate our innovation and increase our capacity to meet the growing demand for our products and food and fiber, globally. Our goal is to make mycorrhizal inoculation an essential tool to increase plant productivity while improving the quality of our lives and the environment. VBC provides the fundamental capacity for achieving that goal.”

Johan Pienaar, Global Business Manager for VBC’s plant growth regulator business, will become the new Chief Operating Officer of MA, reporting directly to Ted Melnik. Pienaar will operate out of the Grants Pass office.
