Valent BioSciences Unveils New Biorational Research Center

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Grand Opening event attracts attendees from around the world to tour high tech facility

Libertyville, IL, July 25, 2018 — Valent BioSciences (VBC) officially opened the doors of its new global research facility, the Biorational Research Center (BRC), at a July 24thgala at Libertyville’s stylish Innovation Park. More than 250 guests, ranging from the Deputy Governor of the State of Illinois, to strategic partners, customers, allied industry representatives, and leading members of the scientific community gathered to join Grand Opening festivities and tour the 85,000 square-foot facility adjacent to the company’s long-time headquarters.

The opening of the BRC completes a two-year build-out and transition from VBC’s legacy research facility in nearby Long Grove, IL. The facility boasts approximately 65,000 square-feet of open-concept lab and office space combined with a state-of-the-art, 20,000 square-foot greenhouse. In addition to its technological upgrades, the move is intended to streamline cross-functional collaboration among VBC’s industry-leading team of innovative plant, soil, and formulation scientists, microbiologists, entomologists, and chemists – a team that brings best-in-class solutions to agriculture, public health, and forest health professionals around the world.

“This breathtaking new facility is a testimony to the notable success of our R&D group,” said Ted Melnik, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of VBC. “All patents and awards aside, that success ultimately comes down to an ability to develop and commercialize sustainable products that deliver clear value to our stakeholders – whether they be growers, food companies, foresters, or governments that fight against insect-borne disease.”

The BRC is the latest addition to the Sumitomo Chemical Company (SCC) Biorational Research Network (BRN), a strategic enterprise that includes both internal resources and external (3rdparty) expertise. As the parent company to VBC, SCC deploys a global team of scientists operating in lab and field research facilities at key locations around the globe. Central to the BRN mission are investigations that brings together biorational and conventional technologies that work in harmony with nature.

The opening of the BRC is another in a string of investments VBC has made into its burgeoning biorational business over recent years. In addition to the acquisition of Pace International (2012) and Mycorrhizal Applications (2015), VBC also opened its Iowa-based $150 million biorational manufacturing plant in 2014, the first ever purpose-built biorational facility in the world.

Valent BioSciences Corporation Acquires Mycorrhizal Applications, Inc.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Industry leader adds innovative technology platform to further expand its rapidly growing biorational business

LIBERTYVILLE, IL, March 4, 2015 – Valent BioSciences Corporation (VBC), the leader in biorational product development for agriculture, public health, and forestry worldwide, announced today it has acquired Mycorrhizal Applications, Inc. (MA), the world’s largest producer of mycorrhizal fungal inoculum. Mycorrhizal inoculation increases plant productivity by forming a symbiotic relationship with plant roots. Mycorrhizal hyphae attach to roots and radiate out into soil, enhancing access to nutrients and water made available to plants.

The acquisition adds another strategic platform to VBC’s rapidly expanding global biorational business, providing additional tools for the Biorational Window platform being developed with its parent, Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (SCC).

“The acquisition of Mycorrhizal Applications will allow us to accelerate the development of our rhizosphere strategy and immediately reinforce our strength in the biorational business,” said Ted Melnik, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of VBC. “The move affords us the unique opportunity to leverage our internal resources and develop an entire suite of innovative rhizosphere products and technologies that expands our portfolio to meet the needs of growers around the world.”

Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Oregon, MA’s earliest products were developed for forestry and nursery applications. Nearly 90% of the world’s plants form an association with mycorrhizal fungi, which colonize plant roots and provide the host with enhanced capacity for water and mineral uptake. In exchange, the fungi benefit from access to plant carbohydrates, which they use for food. Today, MA’s business has grown to include products for commercial agriculture, manufactured soils, turf, landscape and restoration.

The company’s leading brand, MycoApply®, is sold in powder, granular, and liquid form. Melnik said a dedicated R&D budget, earmarked for rhizosphere product development, has been established to coincide with the acquisition. VBC anticipates a host of new uses, with widespread agricultural applications, being developed in the next few years. Globally, MycoApply® will be sold through the SCC affiliate network. Valent U.S.A.

Corporation will handle commercialization of the Mycorrhizal Applications pipeline and portfolio in Agricultural crops in the NAFTA region, including marketing, product development and sales through associated distribution networks. With this innovative platform technology, Valent U.S.A. will create crop protection and enhancement solutions that complement its existing portfolio to deliver more value to its customers.

“We’re very excited to become part of the VBC and SCC family,” said Dr. Mike Amaranthus, the renowned rhizosphere scientist who co-founded the business with wife, Eileen. “While we will provide our customers with the same quality products and expert support they’ve come to expect from us, VBC’s investment will further accelerate our innovation and increase our capacity to meet the growing demand for our products and food and fiber, globally. Our goal is to make mycorrhizal inoculation an essential tool to increase plant productivity while improving the quality of our lives and the environment. VBC provides the fundamental capacity for achieving that goal.”

Johan Pienaar, Global Business Manager for VBC’s plant growth regulator business, will become the new Chief Operating Officer of MA, reporting directly to Ted Melnik. Pienaar will operate out of the Grants Pass office.

Valent BioSciences Corporation Earns ISO 9001:2008 Re-certification Following a System-Wide Audit

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LIBERTYVILLE, IL., December 11, 2013 – Valent BioSciences Corporation is pleased to announce that its US-based operations have earned another three-year certification of compliance with ISO 9001:2008 standards. The certification comes as the result of a full, system-wide audit by Perry Johnson Registrars, Inc. (PJR), the first such audit since VBC achieved ISO-certification in 2010.

Valent BioSciences is a worldwide leader in the development and commercialization of biorational products. Biorationals are products typically derived from biological origins that are highly specific in their activity while providing economic, health, and/or environmental benefits. Biorational products include microbial insecticides, fungicides, and nematicides, as well as plant growth regulators used in production agriculture and for managing plant growth, quality and stress in crops.

“ISO-compliance puts VBC in a select group among biopesticide manufacturers,” said Ted Melnik, VBC Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer. “Our adherence to these standards reflects our firm commitment to delivering quality and value through our entire biorational portfolio to customers around the world.”

The company’s current certification applies to VBC’s management systems, and plans already are being discussed for pursuit of certification for the new state of the art biorational manufacturing facility in Osage, Iowa, scheduled to begin production in mid- 2014. Quality management of all manufacturing operations is critical to support biorational products, especially for companies such as VBC who have a truly global footprint.

This year’s audit results were particularly important – not only in terms of the auditors’ findings but also as validation for the company’s internal, continuous improvement process launched in 2010. VBC’s next full-systems audit is scheduled for 2016.

The six-story tall fermenters have an annual production capacity in excess of 15 million gallons and will soon drive the first ever facility designed and built specifically for the manufacture of biorational products.

VBC is a global leader in the development and commercialization of biorational products used in agriculture, public health, and forestry. The establishment of this facility furthers the commitment of Valent BioSciences, and its parent company Sumitomo Chemical Company, to continue delivering high quality biorational products to customers. The plant will have the capability to manufacture a broad range of biorational products including microbial insecticides, fungicides, and nematicides, as well as plant growth regulators.

Tom Green, VBC Vice President of Global Supply Chain and Manufacturing, reports that the Osage project remains on budget and ahead of schedule, having completed 330 consecutive safe work days to date since last year’s groundbreaking. Once operational, the plant will not only be manufacturing products for use in agriculture but will also be a major consumer of corn, soybeans, and other commodities.

“This is an exciting time, not only for VBC but also for our customers and markets around the world,” Green said. “As knowledge about how our products work and how they create value has increased, we’ve seen tremendous growth on a global scale. This facility puts us in position to feed that growing demand efficiently, and with the highest quality products.”

Plant utilities are scheduled to come online this fall, as VBC’s new quality assurance laboratory will become the first functioning portion of the facility. Green reports hiring has begun in earnest to fill the 90 skilled positions being created with the creation of the plant, and anticipates the full staff will be in place by the first of the year.

The plant is scheduled to come online in spring of 2014.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for Valent BioSciences Marks Growth of Biorational Product Segment in Agriculture

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OSAGE, IA., March 16, 2012 – Dignitaries from state and local government joined representatives from Valent BioSciences Corporation (VBC) in Iowa today for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on the company’s new $146 million biorational manufacturing facility.

Biorationals are products derived from natural or biological origins that are highly specific in their activity and have low impact on workers and the environment. The biorational industry has achieved steady growth in agriculture as awareness about needs for sustainable solutions in food production and distribution have increased.

“The world needs sustainable technologies that deliver measureable value not only to the food production chain, but also to consumers,” said Mike Donaldson, President and CEO of Valent BioSciences. “Our growth and ability to make this investment shows that our products are meeting those needs on a large scale, and that our determination, focus, and commitment to developing these technologies are being rewarded.”

Iowa Governor Terry E. Branstad joined Donaldson at the ceremony, along with members of the media and 25 other state and local dignitaries.

“This is a proud day for the state of Iowa, for Osage, and for Mitchell County,” Branstad said. “We recognize that VBC had many choices as to where to build this facility. That they chose to build it here is a testament to our community and the hard work and dedication of the people of this state.”

Scheduled for completion in 2014, the new 130,000 square-foot facility will be the first- ever designed and dedicated entirely to the manufacturing of biorationals. When complete, production will include microbial products as well as plant growth regulators and other biorationals. VBC is the leading developer and manufacturer of biorational product solutions for agriculture, public health, and forestry worldwide.
