LIBERTYVILLE, Ill., November 19, 2020 – Valent BioSciences LLC, the worldwide leader in the development, manufacturing, and commercialization of biorational products, is expanding its research collaboration with parent company Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. by establishing a dedicated Biorational Research Unit at Sumitomo Chemical’s Health & Crop Sciences Research Laboratory (HCRL) in Takarazuka, Hyogo, Japan. Both organizations have worked closely together on specific projects at the HCRL for several years in response to the growing importance of biorational and sustainable agricultural solutions. The enhanced partnership, which includes the addition of technical staff with expertise in a broad variety of areas, begins on December 1.

“This deeper collaboration is a natural evolution of our ongoing relationship with the HCRL, and will enable us to broaden our biorational research programs and activities in a dedicated and more structured manner,” said Ted Melnik, Valent BioSciences’ Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “It also kicks off some of the critical initiatives announced recently as part of our SynBio (synthetic biology) initiative at the Biorational Research Center in Libertyville that will help accelerate our work in creating next-generation businesses in this burgeoning field.”

One of the primary benefits to Valent BioSciences of closer collaboration with the HCRL includes greater access to its various research platforms and leading-edge technologies that can grow the biorational business significantly, both in Japan and globally.

Initially, the Biorational Research Unit at the HCRL will focus on biopesticide discovery, field application of plant growth regulators (PGRs) in Japan, and various projects related to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). As the group’s technical capabilities and expertise increase, Valent BioSciences will continue expanding its range of research activities.

“Because the HCRL is a centralized research facility, we will be able to leverage its in-house expertise and facilities on an ongoing basis and augment our research requirements as needed,” said Melnik. “We will also receive greater technical support for our business in Japan while benefiting from the broader scientific opportunities that can be achieved by networking with Japanese academia.”

The HCRL was established about 50 years ago to help create healthier and more hygienic lives, and contribute to improving the yield of food crops and agricultural productivity through its expertise in organic synthetic chemistry, biology, and formulation technologies. The laboratory is engaged in the development of new agricultural chemicals and functional fertilizers, more effective and safer household insecticides, and technologies for preventing infectious diseases, as well as efficient synthetic methods for pharmaceutical chemicals. It collaborates with Sumitomo Chemical’s overseas Group companies to incorporate the needs of global customers into its research and development activities, thereby contributing to the expansion and globalization of the company’s business.

Valent BioSciences Partners with Vita Bee Health to Develop New Biological Wax Moth Control That Safeguards Health of Honeybees

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Valent BioSciences Partners with Vita Bee Health to Develop New Biological Wax Moth Control That Safeguards Health of Honeybees

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill., June 16, 2020 – Two global leaders are expanding their longtime collaborative partnership by launching a new biological wax moth control product that helps safeguard the health of honeybees. Valent BioSciences LLC, the worldwide leader in the development, manufacturing, and commercialization of biorational products, and Vita Bee Health, the world’s largest dedicated supplier of honeybee health products, have joined together to develop B402 (also known as Certan), an advanced and effective solution that protects honeycombs from wax-eating caterpillars.

The new product utilizes a concentrated solution of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a bacterium commonly found in nature that selectively kills wax moths at the larval stage. These moths, which can destroy honeybee wax combs and even the structure of hives, cause widespread damage and even colony losses for beekeepers. B402 offers efficacy of up to 100 percent against wax moth larvae.

“Bt is a commonly used biological control for many agricultural pests,” said Dr. Max Watkins, CEO of Vita Bee Health. “Together with Valent Biosciences, we faced the challenge of finding a strain that selectively targets wax moths. We sought to improve on B401, an earlier bee-safe product. Our synergistic relationship with Valent Biosciences, combined with the company’s quality control and product consistency, enabled us to work together successfully to locate a strain and formulation of Bt that demonstrates specific control of both greater and lesser wax moths (Galleria mellonella and Achroia grisella), while being harmless to bees under this use. Valent BioSciences continues to be extremely supportive in helping us innovate for the benefit of beekeepers.”

Regina Rieckenberg, Vice President of Global Marketing and Business Management for Valent BioSciences, said, “We have worked closely with Vita Bee Health for years and, as a result, have developed valuable knowledge and insights about the honeybee industry. With our extensive expertise in biological products, we were able to team with Vita Bee Health to create this innovative new formulation offering a variety of unmatched benefits.”

Recently approved for use with honeybee colonies by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), B402 is safe to use and harmless to beneficial insects and pollinators. It leaves no chemical residues in wax or honey, and only a single application is necessary to provide complete protection.

Valent BioSciences Announces Launch of Global Soil Health Initiative

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Recognized leader in sustainable solutions for agriculture unveils pioneering rhizosphere innovation at Biostimulants World Congress

Barcelona, Spain, November 18, 2019 – Valent BioSciences (VBC) officially launched its new biorational soil health initiative today at the 4th Biostimulants World Congress in Barcelona. The launch follows more than four years of strategic investment including the acquisition of Mycorrhizal Applications in 2015, research and development, and business development to expand the company’s leading position in biological solutions for agriculture into the soil microbiome.

In the months leading up to the launch, VBC made several moves to fortify its commitment to this new area of business. In addition to multiple acquisitions, strategic partnerships, and licensing agreements, the company opened its new state-of-the-art Biorational Research Center (BRC) last year in northern Illinois. The new facilities reflect a buildout of VBC’s research team to support soil health research and innovation. VBC also assembled a Soil Health Advisory Board to leverage knowledge from soil health experts across industry, academia, and basic research.

“Today marks the culmination of one important growth phase for Valent BioSciences and celebrates the beginning of another,” said Ted Melnik, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of VBC. “Biorational soil health is a natural extension of our business, one that promises a whole new array of possibilities for VBC, our customers, and our wide range of stakeholders around the world. It’s an exciting time.”

Soil health is recognized to be important to the future health of our planet and a new frontier in agriculture. While the physical and chemical properties of soil are better understood, we are just beginning to understand the fundamental role microbes contribute to soil health. It is estimated that more than one billion microbes can exist in a single teaspoon of healthy soil.

Central to the VBC soil health platform is a line of products under the brand name MycoApply®. These products are a scientifically selected consortium of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) species. AMF are soil-borne microbes that form a symbiotic relationship with about 80% of all plant species. By connecting to roots and forming filamentous strands called hyphae, mycorrhizae can extend the absorption area of plant root systems. AMF provide several benefits to the plant including increased water and nutrient uptake and abiotic stress mitigation. Mycorrhizal hyphae also produce a sticky glycoprotein called glomalin that forms the basis of stable soil structure by improving soil aggregation which results in improved stability, water penetration, and holding capacity. AMF are a cornerstone and indicator species of soil health but can be negatively impacted by soil disruption and intensive agricultural practices. Supplemental applications of AMF in combination with cultural practices such as cover crops and no-till programs promise to improve soil health while providing shorter-term crop health and yield benefits.

“The plant health benefits of AMF have been an evolving area of study since the late 1960s,” said Randy Martin, VBC Global Technical Development Specialist for soil health, “but it’s only recently that the full extent of the soil health benefits have become better understood.” Martin explains that AMF cannot persist in soils without a living host plant, and that tillage practices common to so many cropping systems leave soils bereft of the fungi that contribute to strong soil structure. Without AMF and glomalin, soil aggregates become unstable which reduces the soil’s water holding capacity, and the availability of water and nutrients to the plant.

The company is in the midst of the single largest research program ever devoted to AMF, with ongoing trials on 30 crops in 30 countries.

Today, at the Biostimulants World Congress (stand 6, Level 1), VBC is demonstrating 3-D root imaging technology being co-developed with the Chris Topp Laboratory at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis. Through innovative application of magnetic resonance imaging, VBC and the Topp Lab are able to monitor and observe plant root development and microbial interactions through non-destructive means for the first time in history. Visitors to the stand are able to navigate and explore plant root images like never before using powerful virtual reality equipment.

For more information on VBC’s soil health initiative and the benefits of mycorrhizal fungi, visit www.valentbiosciences.com/soilhealth.
