A Global Leader for Global Health

Malaria transmitted by mosquitoes is one of the world’s greatest public health threats. In 2010, there were an estimated 216 million cases of malaria around the world, according to the World Health Organization.

Malaria killed an estimated 655,000 people in 2010, with the greatest toll being taken on African children under the age of five.

But malaria is not the only vector-borne disease of importance.

  • Zika virus was declared a Public Health Emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO) in February of 2016 due to the effect on babies in utero of an infected mother: microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome.
  • Dengue fever, together with the associated dengue hemorrhagic fever, is the world’s fastest-growing vector-borne disease
  • West Nile virus has emerged as one of the most important vector-transmitted diseases in the temperate regions of North America and Europe
  • Mosquitoes also transmit Chikungunya, which has been cited as the cause of numerous epidemics in Asia and Africa, and has expanded to Europe
  • Onchocerciasis, or river blindness, is a parasitic disease transmitted through the bites of infected black flies, which carry immature larval forms of the parasite from human to human

As the global leader in biorational pesticides, Valent BioSciences is helping abatement professionals combat these vector-borne diseases with the tools and expertise to address each unique challenge around the globe.
